To understand the impact of Artificial Intelligence on our jobs we must first understand that Artificial Intelligence, is the development of computer systems to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence. Artificial Intelligence is about making machines or creating software that mimics humans but eventually supersedes them in terms of efficiency. There is no doubt that AI Robots will be taking over most of our jobs within this century, so we need to be proactive and prepare a plan to ease into that transition. This is a meaningful topic to discuss for me because I will be one of the workers seeking a job during the Robot Revolution. Teens need to realize that in the future, not just our friends, and immigrants, but robots will be there competing for our jobs.
If a job is boring or repetitive then there is a high possibility for it to be replaced by an automated machine. Present-day, we can see that Amazon applies these AI Robots in their warehouses that drive around and package efficiently replacing the need for human work. A Brookings Institution report about the impacts of Automation and Artificial Intelligence in various cities across the United States shows cities such as New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, and Dallas, having the highest percentage of jobs that are susceptible to be replaced. All of these cities have millions of jobs, and almost half of them are going to be replaced by autonomous machines in the next couple of decades.
Gen Z will have the highest risk because entry-level jobs opportunities are going to be the first ones to go. It will also make it harder for underrepresented groups of immigrants to acquire a job because of the pressure that a robot can perform better than you. The effects of this will cause more people to become unemployed and will never get a chance to get in. The government and major corporations that are neglecting this, is a matter of concern. Without the support of the government to create policies that can help our workforce adjust to the growing market for AI Robots, we will have no progress.
The local governments need to initiate sustained efforts to ensure the labor market works tolerably for people in the AI era of automation. If the leaders of the nation promote a growth mindset and facilitate a smoother transition for workers to another job, then people would be supportive of robots in their working environment. Another way to support the laborers is to make skill development more financially accessible. If the federal, state, local, and civic leaders can reduce hardships for workers who are struggling, like expanding income supports for workers in low-paying jobs, there is still value for workers in this time because we need creative thinking a human brain brings. We have to be more prepared for the Robot Revolution because companies are preparing to produce the next big AI machine that will take your jobs.
